Pamela Lillian Isley was a brilliant botanist from Seattle who had served as a guinea pig for the scientist Jason Woodrue; he injected toxins into her bloodstream to grant her abilities such as immunity to any poison, though the procedure also rendered her sterile. After being abandoned by Woodrue while he was fleeing the authorities, spending six months in the hospital, and learning of her boyfriend's sudden death, Pamela suffered violent mood swings that drove her to abandon her studies and move to Gotham City, where she would begin her career as an eco-terrorist under the name "Poison Ivy".

A staunch defender of the plant kingdom, she harbors a fierce hatred for the human race, though her close relationship with Harley Quinn is the main reason she would think twice before killing someone. She often acts mischievously and with the air of a *femme fatale*, yet any harm done to plants infuriates her, as she regards them as her own children.
