Born on the corrupt Caribbean island of Santa Prisca, Bane served the life sentence his father, Edmund Dorrance (also known as King Snake), had escaped; he grew up in the infamous Peña Duro prison, where he trained physically with intense fervor, read as many books as possible, and committed his first murder at the age of eight when a thug tried to extract information from him. After crowning himself king of the prison, he was forced to test "Venom"—a mysterious drug that had killed all previous test subjects. It nearly killed Bane too, but ultimately acted as a potent steroid that caused no debilitating side effects, provided he consumed it every twelve hours. After moving to Gotham, he earned the title "the man who broke the Bat" for once snapping Batman's spine.

A muscular white man standing 2 meters tall and weighing 135 kilograms, he possesses superhuman endurance, an eidetic memory, and vast knowledge of martial arts and various sciences. In addition to wearing a mechanism that supplies him with the drug Venom via tubes connected to his brain, he is clad in black boots, long indigo trousers, a black tank top, dark fingerless gloves, and a sort of blackish wrestling mask featuring a white outline and red eyes. He is a fearless and cunning criminal obsessed with destroying Batman—both physically and psychologically—viewing him as the embodiment of a monstrous bat that tormented him in his dreams since childhood.
