Chicago, 19th century. Daniel Robitaille was the son of a formerly enslaved man who had grown wealthy by inventing a shoe-manufacturing machine during the American Civil War; this allowed Daniel to grow up to become a cultured, gentlemanly painter. After falling in love with—and secretly impregnating—a white virgin he had been commissioned to paint, her father was so outraged that he orchestrated Daniel's lynching: Daniel had his hand severed and was smeared with honey from a beehive so that bees would sting him to death, after which his body was burned on a pyre. Yet, he would later return as a vengeful specter, tormenting anyone who denied his existence or dared to summon him through the power of urban legend.

He wears a large, dark brown leather trench coat with shaggy mahogany-colored trim, a white shirt with a neckerchief, gray trousers with a blue check pattern, and black leather shoes. Possessing a calm and captivating demeanor, his goal is to spread his legend so that it endures.
