The surgeon Jacob Tess Freudstein, who lived with his wife and daughter in an isolated house in New Whitby, New England, during the early 19th century, was obsessed with discovering immortality; at a certain point in his research into cellular regeneration and mitosis, he concluded that the key lay in replacing organs and blood—a realization that drove him to commit murder (starting with his own family) to obtain material for the experiments he conducted in his home's basement.
