According to the novel, Erik Destler was a Frenchman born with a deformed face who joined a traveling Gypsy fair; later, upon being sentenced to death, he went into hiding in the cellars of a Parisian opera house. Film adaptations may alter the details, including the character's name itself.
All versions agree that he is a fair-skinned male who dresses almost entirely in black and wears a pale mask.
