The primary theory regarding Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot's origins holds that, in addition to being bullied from a young age due to his eccentric appearance, he was the son of a couple who owned a bird shop—a business he grew so fond of that he decided to study ornithology. It remains unclear, however, whether he turned to a life of crime because he was rejected by his high-society family or because the bird shop was seized due to unpaid debts incurred by his overprotective mother; she had instilled in him the habit of always carrying an umbrella after his father died of pneumonia from walking unprotected in the rain. According to «Batman Returns» (1992), he was born deformed and abandoned as an infant in a river flowing into Gotham City's sewers, where he was raised among penguins and came to despise humanity.

A short, stout man with a very fair complexion, dark hair sprouting from the nape of his neck, a pointed nose, and three fingers on each hand. He dresses elegantly, typically wearing a top hat that matches his black coat, a monocle, and a white shirt with a black bow-jabot beneath a buttoned mustard-colored waistcoat, along with gray trousers and black pointed shoes. He always carries an umbrella and sometimes a cigarette holder. He is a vile, intelligent mobster with a fondness for birds, backed by various contacts within the criminal underworld.
