ORIGIN: "Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic Computer 9000", better known as "HAL-9000", is the computer system aboard the spacecraft Discovery One.

DESCRIPTION: An incredibly knowledgeable artificial intelligence (AI) that was given the simple order to ensure the ship reaches its destination on Jupiter, but ends up developing neurosis along with a sense of inadequacy as a result of the astronauts' true mission purpose: to study the signal sent by TMA-1, an alien monolith. It lacks a physical body, communicates through a deep male voice, and has absolute control over the ship's machinery.
