The most popular theory alleges that the Joker was a vicious criminal named Jack White or Red Hood (an alias later used for the character Jason Todd) who, during one of his crimes, fell into a vat of acid that disfigured and stained his body white and green, contributing to an irreparable mental imbalance that drove him to commit crimes without restraint. Once Batman imprisoned him in Arkham Asylum, he managed to brainwash his psychiatrist, Harleen Quinzel, into helping him with his schemes without regard for her feelings for him. In the 2019 film of the same name, he plays Arthur Fleck, a depressive comedian with pseudobulbar affect who lives with his ailing mother and gradually descends into madness due to the cruel society of Gotham City during the year 1981.

Slender build, pale skin, eyes rimmed in black, greenish hair slicked back, and red-painted lips often sporting a exaggerated smile. He almost always wears an elegant, mostly purple outfit consisting of a tailcoat with a flower adorning the lapel, long pleated trousers, silk gloves, a button-down shirt with a bow tie, pointed shoes... and sometimes a wide-brimmed hat. He is a sadistic, laughing, and joking man who boasts the title "Clown Prince of Crime" and is always plotting to overthrow his nemesis Batman or plunge Gotham City into chaos.
