During the Heian period (794–1185), the beautiful yet vain wife—or concubine—of a jealous samurai was courted by several men and frequently committed adultery; in a fit of rage, her husband slashed her mouth open and asked if she still thought she was beautiful. There are other versions of this legend that also end with a woman having a slashed mouth.
A "yōkai" (Japanese creature) or "gwinshin" (Korean ghost) in the form of an attractive woman with a face mask concealing half her face. She approaches a person to ask if she is beautiful; if they say yes, she removes the mask and repeats the question. If the person answers negatively, they are brutally murdered... but if they answer affirmatively again, the "Slit-Mouthed Woman" pulls out a pair of scissors to give them a mouth just like hers.
