Born in 1970, the product of a rape committed by a priest against a woman named Evelyn Osorio—who had fled to a Christian hospital and, shortly after giving birth, was tormented by voices commanding her to drown her baby—Samara was nearly killed by her mother, only to be stopped in time by nuns. After her mother was institutionalized, Samara was adopted by Anna and Richard Morgan, a horse-breeding couple living on Moesko Island who grew to love her dearly; however, as she grew, she developed supernatural abilities. Unable to control them, she inadvertently triggered a series of tragic events that led her adoptive mother to throw her into a remote well at the Shelter Mountain Inn, where she ultimately perished from starvation and hypothermia. This restored peace to Moesko Island... but Samara's soul would return years later seeking vengeance once a cabin was built over the well where she had died, using her "nensha" power to imprint disturbing images and memories from her life onto a videotape.
