Its gestation begins inside an oomorph, which contains a "facehugger" (a creature shaped like a hand with a long tail) tasked with leaping onto a victim's face to render them comatose and orally implant the fetus of a "chestburster" (a larval-stage Xenomorph); after the facehugger dies and the victim wakes up, the victim ultimately perishes once their "guest" has grown enough to be born—bursting through the torso—and then rushes to find a safe place to metamorphose into an adult Xenomorph.

It possesses corrosive, acid-like blood, navigates via scent, feeds primarily on flesh, moves on both two and four legs, can scale any surface, and is capable of living for centuries. Its physical structure—which never emits heat—is determined by the DNA of the host organism, which also transfers a portion of its memory, thereby aiding the creature's adaptation to a specific environment. Its eusocial nature dictates that it live in colonies ruled by a Queen, who produces the egg-morphs and maintains order among her subjects through telepathy. When a drone reaches the age of 100 or is rewarded with royal jelly by the Queen, it evolves into a Praetorian; this is the only Xenomorph variant that, in addition to undergoing a sex change, can either carry on the Queen's legacy or transform into a new Queen to establish a fresh colony. Despite its remarkable intelligence, it behaves like a wild animal with generally nocturnal habits and an aversion to fire.
